Data description (abstract)
The study sought to examine the multidimensional nature of reading engagement, utilising the Reading Engagement Scale (McGeown & Conradi-Smith, 2023) which simultaneously measures children’s behavioral, cognitive, affective and social reading engagement.
This study provides the first validation of this scale, testing across three different English-speaking countries (United States, England, Singapore) with approximately 350 children (aged 8-11) in each country, to explore its reliability and suitability across different education systems and contexts. In addition, child data (sex, grade level) and a measure of reading motivation were completed by all children. A subset of children also completed standardised assessments of reading skill.

Raw datasets from all three project sites (Singapore, US, UK) were combined into a single datafile, with new variables created for participant ID and location. One data transformation was conducted on the 'Grade' variable, where years in the UK and Singapore were recoded to grades to align with US data, with conversion to one grade level below (i.e., Year 3 = Grade 2; Year 4 = Grade 3; Year 5 = Grade 4; Year 6 = Grade 5). Additionally, new composite scores were created for behavioral engagement, behavioral engagement (fiction), behavioral engagement (non-fiction), affective engagement, cognitive engagement, social engagement and reading motivation (value), through adding relevant subtest scores.
