This data collection was funded by three separate grants. The development of the job quality quiz and Wave 1 of data collection was funded by Cardiff University’s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (ES/M500422/1). Wave 2 of the quiz was supported by the ESRC's PrOPEL Hub (ES/T001771/1). Wave 3 was supported by WISERD's Civil Society Research Programme funded by the ESRC (ES/S012435/1).
Data description (abstract)
This data provides evidence on non-pecuniary job quality in the United Kingdom. It is based on quiz data collected from almost 150 thousand individuals via the online job quiz: www.howgoodismyjob.com. The data was collected during 3 Waves. Wave 1 was undertaken between July 2018–January 2020 during which approximately 49,600 people responded to the quiz. Wave 2 was undertaken between May–August 2022 during which time approximately 50,800 responded. A third Wave was undertaken between July and September 2024 when approximately 43,800 responded.

An online quiz designed to attract large numbers of individuals to take part in a quick easy to complete series of questions taken from the 2017 Skills and Employment Survey. The 2017 SES was funded jointly by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Cardiff University and the Department for Education with funding from the Welsh Government to boost the sample in Wales (ES/P005292/1). A small subset of questions relating to 10 dimensions of job quality were selected for inclusion into the quiz (www.howgoodismyjob.com). In return for their participation, all those who took part in the quiz were provided feedback as to how their job compared to those held by others in similar roles. Questions remained consistent over time. A question on remote working was introduced following the pandemic at Wave 2. A question on hours insecurity was introduced during Wave 3. Quiz takers completed the quiz online, as and when they chose, and were recruited through paid-for adverts on social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, and through other promotion campaigns. These were intended to prompt audience curiosity and trigger participation. We maintained this approach throughout the 3 Waves of data collection. For each social media campaign, the target audience was those who were living and working in the UK and were aged between 20 and 65. |

Quiz data were cleaned and coded to numeric variables using STATA. Occupational codes have been assigned by quiz takers locating their job within an index of job titles that have been coded to the 4-digit level of the 2020 Standard Occupational Classification. The selected job title has been removed to maintain the anonymity of respondents. Post code areas were also assigned by quiz takers locating the postcode of their home address within a list post code areas. Respondents were also invited to provide a free text response to the question "How good or bad is your job and why?". These responses have been removed.
