Title: Understanding resilience to El Nino effects in a Southern Kenyan coastal socio-ecological system (Project No. NE/K010484/1, funded by ESPA through SPACES and CESEA).

This archive is a repository for a) the El Nino database and b) accompanying documents for two ESPA funded projects, CESEA and SPACES, which operated in the southern area of Kenya. These studies investigated the interdependent coastal ecosystems of mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs, and collected socio-economic data from coastal communities with high reliance on ecosystem services, such as artisanal fisheries and mangrove products. This supplementary project utilised the personnel, expertise and infrastructure of CESEA and SPACES to investigate the effects of El Nino at existing study sites.

### a) El Nino Data (within 'data' folder)
- The El Nino Household Survey Data is contained within a Microsoft Access database (*SPACES_elnino_database.accdb*).

### b) Accompanying documents (within 'docs' folder)
- The accompanying documents are all in docx format with a brief description of each provided below:
    + **Consent form** (*SPACES_elnino_consent_form*): A Word document which was read to the respondent before the interview to obtain their informed consent (1 page).
    + **List of data collected** (*SPACES_elnino_data_list*): An Excel document that contains an overview of the data collected in the surveys (1 sheet).
    + **Synthesis of study site and focus group findings** (*SPACES_elnino_focus_group_summary*): A Word document providing a synthesis of focus group findings within study sites. This includes summaries of wellbeing exposures to El Nino events, sensitivity of livelihoods to El Nino effects, methods used to create resilience to El Nino events in communities, respondents percieved site wellbeing change resulting from El Nino events, the exact types of El Nino event exposures felt by sites, a timeline of the most severe events, long-term trends and seasonal hazards felt by sites, impact of exposure on specific wellbeing domains and finally the impact of events on the economy and livelihoods (14 pages).  
    + **El Nino Household Survey** (*SPACES_elnino_hh_survey*): A Word document showing the household survey used to collect El Nino data in English translation (2 pages).
    + **El Nino KI Interview** (*SPACES_elnino_ki_interview*): A Word document containing the questions asked during the semi-structured interviews held with several key informants at national/regional and local levels. The document also already includes information about the project and the consent form read to the respondents prior to the interview (6 pages).
