The following describes the data collected and used for a study conducted by Beryl Noƫ, Liam D. Turner, David E. J. Linden, Stuart M. Allen, Gregory R. Maio and Roger M. Whitaker. This data was collected using the custom made application "Tymer", which recorded smartphone use data and requested participants to fill in micro-surveys throughout the day, and surveys that participants filled out at either a briefing or debriefing session. === STRUCTURE OF FILES === Mood sampling on smartphones 2016 +-- ReadMe.txt | +-- Datasets | +-- BFI.csv | +-- DSUQ.csv | +-- MCQb.csv | +-- MCQd.csv | +-- MS.csv | +-- SASb.csv | +-- SASd.csv | +-- Research instruments +-- BFI.pdf +-- Briefing_information_sheet.pdf +-- Consent_form.pdf +-- Debriefing_sheet.pdf +-- DSUQ.pdf +-- MCQ.pdf +-- SAS.pdf === DATA COLLECTION METHOD === Data was collected from participants through 3 different ways: (1) surveys administered in a lab setting at a briefing session and at a debriefing session that were at least 8 weeks apart (2) raw usage data obtained from a custom-made app that participants had installed on their phone for 8 weeks, starting after the briefing session (3) micro-surveys consistent of 1 to 3 questions administered through the notifications sent by the app everyday for 8 weeks === RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FILES === Data from the psychometric surveys (BFI, DSUQ, MCQ, SAS) is available in the folder 'Datasets'. Copies of the questionnaires are provided in the 'Research instruments' folder using the same name. BFI - Big Five Inventory: Personality scale by John and Srivastava (1999) providing scores for 5 different personality traits: Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. DSUQ - Demographics and Smartphone Use Quesionnaire: A standard demographics questionnaire was slightly altered and questions on smartphone use were added. Only a portion of the dataset is made available here. MCQ - Monetary-Choice Questionnaire: Delay discounting survey by Kirby & Petry (2004). SAS - Smartphone Addiction Scale: Survey that attributes a score on smartphone dependency by Kwon et al. (2013) No raw usage data is provided in the present data. A portion of the data from the micro-surveys is made available in the 'MS' file in the 'Datasets' folder. This data describes mood survey data, made up of Daily Mood surveys and Current Mood surveys. Duplicates and data of days that had only Current Mood or only Daily Mood survey data were removed. Additionally, if several Daily Mood surveys were registered for the same participant, only the first report was kept. === VARIABLE DEFINITIONS FOR EACH DATASET === SubjectID - anonymized participant number Empty cell - missing data == MS - MOOD SURVEY DATA == DM - Daily Mood DMtime - Daily Mood survey time stamp (epoch) CMtime - Current Mood survey time stamp (epoch) CM - Current Mood CI - Current mood Intensity DM/CM: 0 - tense 1 - excited 2 - happy 3 - relaxed 4 - calm 5 - bored 6 - upset 7 - stressed 8 - neutral (only DM) CI: 0 - strongly 1 - moderately 2 - slightly 4 - neutral Note: If CI is 4 (neutral), current mood is neutral regardless of CM's value. == BFI - BIG FIVE INVENTORY (survey results from briefing) == 1 - disagree strongly 2 - disagree a little 3 - neither agree nor disagree 4 - agree a little 5 - agree strongly == SAS - SMARTPHONE ADDICTION SCALE == SASb - survey results from briefing SASd - survey results from debriefing 1 - strongly disagree 2 - disagree 3 - weakly disagree 4 - weakly agree 5 - agree 6 - strongly agree == MCQ - MONETARY-CHOICE QUESTIONNAIRE == MCQb - survey results from briefing MCQd - survey results from debriefing
