RAC Report on Motoring Readme file The RAC Report on motoring is an on-going survey of Britain’s motorists published by RAC the motoring services company which provides recovery, insurance and other services to over 8 million private and business motorists. The Report started as the Lex Report on Motoring in 1989 and in 2000 changed its name to the RAC Report on Motoring when Lex Service PLC, a motor retailing and leasing company, acquired the RAC Motoring Services and changed its name to RAC plc. The Report is based on a survey of between 1,000 and 2,000 motorists (defined as those who drive at least once a month) in Great Britain and typically covers around 100 questions on motoring attitudes and behaviours. Topics covered include enjoyment of driving, safety, drink and drug driving, the environment, use of public transport, priorities for investment, type of car bought and reasons, commuting and congestion. A limited number of questions are asked each year, other topics are rotated every few years. Up till 2006 the surveys were carried out face to face; since 2007 the questionnaire has been asked on line. Results are weighted to the known population by age and geography. Printed reports on key themes are produced about three months after the survey date. They do not necessarily cover all the questions or contain full tabulations. The files are in three groups: questionnaires, results and reports Questionnaires Research File name Date Agency PP Sample 1989 Nov/Dec 88 MORI 21* 1576 1990 Sept/Oct 89 MORI 26* 1534 1991 Sept/Oct 90 MORI 21* 1564 1992 Oct/Nov 91 MORI 25* 1277 1993 Oct/Nov 92 MORI 29* 2011 1994 Oct-93 MORI 49* 1720 1995 Oct-94 MORI 42* 1519 1996 Oct-95 MORI 45* 1229 1997 Oct/Nov 96 MORI 45* 1209 1998 Oct/Nov 97 MORI 62* 1287 1999 Oct/Nov 98 Sample Surveys 34* 1297 2000 Sept/Oct 99 Sample Surveys 1563 2001 DisabledDrivers questionnaire 2001 InternetV3.qus 2001 questionnaire Sept/Oct 00 Sample Surveys 1378 2002 questionnaire with results Sept/Oct 01 Sample Surveys * 1354 2003 questionnaire Oct-02 Synovate 1000 2004 questionnaire Nov-03 Morpace/Synovate 1000 2005 questionnaire Nov/Dec 04 Morpace/Synovate 1000 2006 questionnaire Jan/Feb 06 Morpace/Synovate 1000 2007 questionnaire Feb/Mar 07 Quadrangle 2029 2008 questionnaire March/Apr 08 Quadrangle 1116 2009 questionnaire Apr-09 Quadrangle 1109 2010 questionnaire Mar-10 Quadrangle 1150 2011 questionnaire Feb/Mar 11 Quadrangle 1002 2012 questionnaire Jan/Feb 12 Quadrangle 1002 2013 questionnaire Mar-13 Quadrangle 1542 2014 questionnaire Feb-14 Quadrangle 1526 2015 questionnaire May-15 Quadrangle 1555 * marked up with results Reports: Publish Date File Name PP Feb-89 1989 Lex Report on Motoring 94 Jan-90 1990 Lex Report on Motoring 116 Jan-91 1991 Lex Report on Motoring 130 Jan-92 1992 Lex Report on Motoring 148 Jan-93 1993 Lex Report on Motoring The Consumer View 142 Jan-94 1994 Lex Report on Motoring The Consumer View 148 Jan-95 1995 Lex Report on Motoring What Drives the Motorist 144 Jan-96 1996 Lex Report on Motoring Listening to all road users 130 Jan-97 1997 Lex Report on Motoring Driving for Safety 100 Jan-98 1998 Lex Report on Motoring Driving for the future 108 Jan-99 1999 Lex Report on Motoring 84 Jan-00 2000 RAC Report on Motoring 81 Jan-01 2001 RAC Report on Motoring Motoring choices - pressure or preference 84 Jan-02 2002 RAC Report on Motoring Going too fast, going too slow 100 Jan-03 2003 RAC Report on Motoring Motoring Facts 91 2003 RAC Report on Motoring Driving on Company Business 32 2003 RAC Report on Motoring Making the most of Britain's Roads 33 2003 RAC Report on Motoring Mobile phones 12 2003 RAC Report on Motoring Drink Driving June 37 Jan-04 2004 RAC Report on Motoring Counting the Cost, cutting congestion 50 Feb-05 2005 RAC Report on Motoring The Agony and Ecstasy of driving 67 Jun-06 2006 The RAC Report on Motoring Future of Motoring - a clear road map or collision course 49 Jun-07 2007 RAC Report on Motoring Driving safely? 58 Jul-08 2008 RAC Report on Motoring 20 Years of Motoring 1988-2008 - Report 1 36 Oct-08 2008 RAC Report on Motoring 20 Years of Motoring Technology - Report 2 36 Dec-08 200820 RAC Report on Motoring Years of Motoring Environment- Report 3 36 Jul-09 2009 RAC Report on Motoring 58 Jun-10 2010 RAC Report on Motoring The driver's perspective 63 Jun-11 2011 RAC Report on Motoring Divided we drive 62 May-12 2012 RAC Report on Motoring A sign of the times 62 Jun-13 2013 RAC Report on Motoring A Motoring Nation 87 Jun-14 2014 RAC Report on Motoring Britain on the road 87 Sep-15 2015 RAC Report on Motoring The speed of change 107 Results: File name 1989 to 1998 Data included on questionnaires 1996 Cross tabs 1997 Cross tabs 1998 Cross tabs 1999 Cross tabs 2000 Cross tabs 2001 Cross tabs 2002 Cross tabs 2002 data index 2002 London tables 2002 Motorcycle tables 2002 Omnibus tables 2002 Tables full 2003 Cross tabs 2003 Driving omnibus full results April 2004 Results 2005 Tables from Morpace 2006 Tables 2007 Tables 2008 Environmental tables addn cross breaks 2008 Environmental tables main cross breaks 2008 Main report tables mileage xbreak 2008 Main report tables mileage type 2008 Main report tables 2008 Technology tables new-used 2008 Technology tables main cross breaks 2009 Tables company xbreak 2009 Tables 2010 Tables 2011 Tables 2012 Tables amended 2012 Tables full data 2013 Tables 2014 Tables Part 1 2014 Tables Part 2 2014 Tables 2015 Tables 1989-1998 are available as annotated questionnaires (pdfs as above) just giving the all-respondents' results for each question.
