The data and documentation herewith are for the CHINA NATIONAL HEALTH ATTITUDES SURVEY 2012-2013, commissioned by University of Glasgow with a grant from the ESRC (ES/J011487/1). 

Professor Jane Duckett, Dr Neil Munro, Professor Kate Hunt (all at University of Glasgow) and Professor Matt Sutton (University of Manchester) wrote the questionnaire. Dr Aofei Lv backtranslated it and assisted with question design. 

The Research Center for Contemporary China (RCCC) at Peking University designed the sample and carried out the fieldwork from 1 November 2012 to 17 January 2013. Professor Shen Mingming (Peking University) led the fieldwork team with assistance from Prof Yan Jie, Dr Chai Jingjing, Liang Yu and Hu Sihui.

The complete data set consists of the following files:
1) ChinPETU13.sps : a syntax file used to create the data file with English labels from the original Chinese version
2) ChinPET13_Data.sav : the data file with English labels.
3) PrimarySamplingUnits_Data.sav : data supplied by the fieldwork organization about the primary sampling units (counties, urban districts, or county-level cities)
4) NonResponse_Data.sav : data supplied by the fieldwork organization about the reasons for non-response (refusal, no one at home etc.)
5) Report_SamplingFieldwork_EN.docx : report by the fieldwork organization
6) Codebook_EN_CH.pdf : codes on the original data file in Chinese
7) Questionnaire for PETU Health Care in China Survey, 2012-13.pdf: Bilingual English/Chinese version of the questionnaire

During the process of creating the data file with English labels, 4 cases were eliminated from the original file of 3,684 cases because the number of qualified persons in the household (q2) exceeded the number recorded as living in the household (q1). The data file thus has 3,680 cases.

The rows in the data file refer to individual respondents. The columns refer to different variables.

Missing answers are generally coded 8 or 88 for Don't know, 9 or 99 for Refuse to answer. Negative codes refer to cases where the question was non-applicable. 

Answers to open-ended questions have been left in the original Chinese.
