The only datafile of this dataset is labelled: "Data_plus_codes.xlsx" There are a few additional files available which contain metadata and procedural details about the research project. Each file is briefly described below. *************************************************************************** *** data file: Data_plus_codes.xlsx *** *************************************************************************** This Microsoft Excel 2013 file contains two sheets. The first sheet "Codes" contains all variable names and provides a description of the type of the variable as well as a detailed explanation what the variables measure. The second sheet "Data" contains the actual data, i.e. 233 observations, one per subject. The same information that is provided in the sheet "Codes" is provided below in this text file. VARIABLE NAME TYPE NUMERIC RANGE DESCRIPTION ID Integer [1, 233] Subject ID weekly Dummy {0,1} 1 in treatments with weekly reminders, 0 otherwise monthly Dummy {0,1} 1 in treatments with mothly reminders, 0 otherwise reminder_interval Integer {0,1,2} 0 in treatments with no reminders, 1 in treatments with monthly reminders, 2 in treatments with weekly reminders (redundant information also captured by the two dummies 'monthly' and 'weekly'; created for easier data analysis) standing_order Dummy {0,1} 1 in treatments where standing orders were used to make donations, 0 in treatments where one-off donations were used to make donations amount_donated Float [0, 15] Total amount a subject donated to the charity over the full duration of the experiment any_donation_made Dummy {0,1} 1 if a subject made at least one donation including donations amounting to zero pounds, 0 otherwise any_donation_greater_zero_made Dummy {0,1} 1 if a subject made at least one donation including donations amounting to at least 0.01 pounds, 0 otherwise number_of_donations_made Integer [0, …] Number of donations made: in the one-off donatio treatments, this number resembles exactly the number of donations that were made; in the standing order treatments this variable measures the number of times new standing orders were set up or existing standing orders were amended task_score Integer [0, …] Number of correctly counted matrices in the real effort task age Integer [0, …] Age in years gender_male Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject is male, 0 if subject is female economics Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject's main field of study is economics, 0 otherwise nationality_british Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject's nationality is British, 0 otherwise nationality_chinese Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject's nationality is Chinese, 0 otherwise SDS Integer [0, 16] Social Desirability Scale; PROC Integer [0, 11] Procrastination inventory; Steel (2010) organized_person Integer [0, 6] Subjects response to "Please indicate how well the two following statements describe you: 'I consider myself to be a very organized person?'" (0 not at all, 6 perfectly accurate) busy_person Dummy {0,1} Subjects response to "Please indicate how well the two following statements describe you: 'I consider myself to be a very busy person?'" (0: not at all, 6: perfectly accurate) mails_per_day Integer [0, …] Subject's response to the question: "How many emails do you receive on average per day?" mails_worth_reading_per_day Integer [0, …] Subject's response to the question: "How many of those would you consider worth reading?" payment_not_collected Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject did not collect its payment at the end of the experiment, 0 otherwise forgot_1 Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject stated having forgotten about making a donation as reason for not donating, 0 otherwise selfish_2 Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject stated needing their money for themselves as reason for not donating, 0 otherwise already_donating_3 Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject stated already donating to another charity as reason for not donating, 0 otherwise not_money_oxfam_4 Dummy {0,1} 1 if subject stated not wanting to donate to Oxfam as reason for not donating, 0 otherwise final_payment Float [0, 15] Sum paid to subjects at the end of the experiment in GBP *************************************************************************** *** Supplementary information: Consent_form.docx *** *************************************************************************** This file contains the consent form particpants filled and signed before they participated in the experiment. *************************************************************************** *** Supplementary information: Check_for_understanding.docx *** *************************************************************************** The sole purpose of this check for understanding was to check whether participants understood the experimental set up. Participants could only continue once they answered all questions correctly. The check for understanding was performed electronically (on the computer screen). *************************************************************************** *** Supplementary information: Task_instructions.docx *** *************************************************************************** This file contains the instructions used to describe the real effort task participants were asked to perform while in the laboratory. *************************************************************************** *** Accompanying research article *** *************************************************************************** A research article based on this dataset is currently work in progress.
